Roll Call Junior City Council July 21, 2014 - 5:00 PM Conference Room 3 MINUTES Vice Chair Sydney Campbell called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. in Conference Room 3 at Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street in Auburn. Junior City Councilmembers present: Vice Chair Sydney Campbell, Dalton Hands, Olivia Thomas and Angelina Zalutskiy. Members Cole Lindell, Mauricio Martinez - Torres, Mary Riel and Tyler Cushing were excused. Staff members present: Deputy Mayor Rich Wagner, Councilmember John Holman and Council Assistant Antoinette Manthey. B. Announcements There were no announcements. C. Agenda Modifications There were no modifications. II. CONSENT AGENDA Motion by Member Thomas to approve the June 16, 2014 minutes, seconded by Member Zalutskiy. Motion carried unanimously 4 -0. A. June 16, 2014 Meeting Minutes III. DISCUSSION ITEMS A. Planning of Auburn's 124th Birthday Celebration Laura Westergard, Executive Director of Auburn Downtown Association -- Planning for Auburn's 124th Birthday Celebration in June 2015 and review of Auburn's 123rd Birthday Celebration held June 2014. Laura Westergard, Executive Director of Auburn Downtown Association (ADA) and Councilmember John Holman shared with the Junior Council a recap of Auburn's 123rd Birthday Celebration held in June 2014. Activities at the celebration included music, poetry, a beer garden and food vendors. Westergard and Holman asked the Junior Council to discuss what kind Page 1 of 2 CA.A Page 2 of 7 of youth activities they would like to see at Auburn's 124th Birthday Celebration next year. Some ideas shared were a car show, henna tattoos, ice cream bar, petting zoo, face painting, balloon animals, dance performances and an obstacle course. Vice Chair Campbell suggested using social media such as Facebook, I nstagram and Twitter to encourage youth attendance at the birthday celebration. Laura Westergard will present the Junior Council's ideas to the Auburn Downtown Association board at their next meeting. B. Anti- Bullying Project Continued planning of Anti - Bullying Project -- report from Junior Councilmember Olivia Thomas on discussions at Rainier Middle School. After speaking with her peers and the Assistant Principal, Member Thomas shared that Rainier Middle School is interested in having an anti - bullying club. She will follow up with the Assistant Principal at the beginning of the school year to start the planning process. Member Hands suggested an Act of Random Kindness (ARK) program that will encourage students to anonymously give small gifts to their peers that may feel excluded or are being bullied. IV. CONSENT AGENDA A. July 21, 2014 Meeting Minutes Due to a lack of quorum, the July 21St meeting minutes will be approved at the next Junior Council meeting held September 15, 2014. III. DISCUSSION ITEMS A. Parliamentary Training Ann Macfarlane, Jurassic Parliament Ann MacFarlane, founder of Jurassic Parliament, educated the Junior Council on basic parliamentary practice.
