HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-05-2014 (2)City of Auburn Arts Commission, City Hall Annex, One Main, Conference Room 2 Tuesday, August 5, 2014 Meeting Minutes Present: Nancy Colson, Charlotte Gollnick, Cart Davidson, Jan Jensen, Colleen Maloney, DeNae McGee, Dan Norman, Donna Smart, Laura Westergard, Arts Coordinator, Maija McKnight, Arts and Events Manager Julie Krueger, Arts and Events Assistant Kelsey D'Andrade. Excused: Feney Perez, Ronie Schwend, Greg Watson. I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Colleen called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Commissioner Maloney moved to approve the May and June 2014 meeting minutes. Commissioner Jensen seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. II. Auburn International Farmers Market Poster Staff McKnight presented the top three posters that were selected as part of a "popular choice" on the market's opening day and presented the one recommended by the Visual Arts Committee to serve as the poster for the 2014 Auburn International Farmers Market. The artwork was done as part of Auburn High School Graphic Design Class taught by Diane Saar. Jan Jensen moved to approve the recommendation of the Visual Arts Committee for the 2015 Farmers Market Poster; Laura Westergard seconded the motion. Motion approved. Commissioners extended their appreciation and gratitude to all the participating students and were impressed at the quality and diversity of artwork presented. III. Downtown Sculpture Gallery Staff McKnight provided a summary of the Downtown Sculpture Gallery program now entering its third year. The Cultural Arts division subscribed to an online call to artist online system, callforentry.org and reviewed applications from 32 artists /67 sculptures (2013, 12 artists /19 sculptures). The details of the call were re- stated, and an overview of the selection process was introduced, and a voting roster distributed. The commission reviewed each of the submitted artworks and the associated materials and determined the six that would be extended a loan agreement. One artwork, that has special installation considerations, was selected given feasibility determined by staff. Three additional artworks were selected as runner -up in case any of the selected artists couldn't participate and /or the pedestals that are currently being constructed as part of the new development downtown become available. No more than one artwork per artist was selected, and a variety of sizes and medium were taken into consideration. Staff will work to contact each artist and placement of each of the artworks will be discussed at the September 2 Arts Commission meeting and deinstallation /installation will be scheduled throughout the month of September. The People's Choice potential purchase will also be discussed at the September Arts Commission meeting. IV. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events • Staff distributed mock -ups of the BRAVO publicity materials and provided a brief snapshop of the marketing plan for the upcoming season. • Pianos on Parade will back this year, with seven artistically - altered pianos being placed throughout Auburn. The pianos will be placed on Thursday, August 7 and then be returned to storage on Monday, September 8, 2014. There are five locations throughout downtown, and a piano placed in Lakeland Hills Haggen Grocery Store and Les Gove Park. • ArtRageous Zones have been occurring throughout the summer at the variety of summer festivals and events. The artists' work directly with the public to offer hands -on -art making activities throughout the scheduled event. • The Autumn Art Walk is scheduled for Friday, September 5, 5 -9 pm • An event to honor and recognize Poet Laureate, Dick Brugger has been scheduled for Thursday, September 11 and will be a joint celebration with his daughter who will have her artwork on display in City Hall Gallery at the same time.
