Tuesday, February 3, 2015 Meeting Minutes
Present: Nancy Colson, Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Colleen Maloney, Dan Norman,
Ronie Schwend, Greg Watson, Laura Westergard, Kelsey D'Andrade, Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight.
Guests: Patricia Cosgrove Excused: DeNae McGee, Donna Smart
I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
Chair Greg called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm. Commissioner Jensen moved to approve the January
2015 meeting minutes. Commissioner Norman seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved.
Maija McKnight announced the newly appointed arts commissioner, Patricia Judd.
II. 2014 Year in Review
Staff Maija McKnight shared the Auburn @Play Year in Review and spoke briefly about Auburn Park's
monthly report that commissioners receive via email.
III. C3: Cornerstone of Creative Capacity Project
Commissioner Colleen Maloney provided an overview of the timeline and goals of the capacity project
from the recent training presentation that she attended. This is a project spearheaded by Arts Ed
Washington and involves meeting with the Superintendent of each King County School district to inquire
and discuss the status of the Arts. Colleen will be scheduling a meeting with the Auburn School District
representatives and participating in the interview alongside a consultant and Arts Ed Washington staff. A
public report will be released at the start of the 2015 - 2016 school year.
IV. Arts Project Support Regrant 2015 Summary
Staff McKnight provided a follow up of the regrant process, award amounts, and updated the commission
on the receipt of the 4Culture Grant of $17,000 for 2015 and 2016. McKnight also updated commissioners
on requested information regarding the Green River Community College Espial publication application.
V. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events
Staff McKnight noted that various call -to- artists are circulating including ArtRageous, Auburn's Downtown
Sculpture Gallery, Streetscapes as well as the GRCC Espial Publication. Also announced was the date of
the sculpture walk which will be on Saturday, April 18th at 4pm. McKnight also provided details on the
upcoming "Bench Marks" program and discussion continued on the terminology used to describe the
Pianos on Parade and Bench Marks would be "Community Arts" in order to distinguish it from the Public
Art Program.
Laura Westergard provided an overview of the recent Chocolate and Wine Walk coordinated by the
Auburn Downtown Association as well as provided an overview of recent meetings and presentation by
Michele Reeves of Civilis Consultants. Michelle Reeves was hired by the City of Auburn as a consultant
for Downtown Business Summit on January 24th to discuss variety of downtown issues. Discussion
continued on some of the topics and issues that arose from these meetings and presentations. McKnight
also noted that Staff are looking into fagade improvements for the Auburn Avenue Theater.
Greg Watson extended the invitation to the Commission to attend the monthly Poetry events that take
place on the 1St Wednesday of every month at the Downtown Station Bistro.
Nancy Colson reminded the commission of the Auburn Symphony Orchestra's upcoming performances
will be on February 14th and 15th that will take place at Auburn's Mountain View High School Auditorium.
The commission thanked Greg Watson for providing a guided tour of the amazing exhibition "Of a
Feather" that showcases notable Pacific Northwest Artists' representations of birds, their relationship with
humans, and their role in our culture. Kudos were also extended to Patricia Cosgrove and the White
River Valley Museum for hosting and coordinating art exhibitions of such high caliber.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:50 pm
