HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-02-2016 Minutes City of Auburn Arts Commission, Clty Hall Annex, One Main, Conference Room 1 Tuesday, February 2, 2016 Meeting Minutes Present: Nancy Colson, Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Patricia Judd, Colleen Maloney, DeNae McGee, Trudi Moses, Dan Norman, Ronie Schwend, Donna Smart, Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts and Events Manager Julie Krueger. Excused: Heather Longhurst I. Call to Order,Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair McGee called the meeting to oriler at 4'S9 pm. Commissioner Jensen moved to approve the February 2016 meeting minutes. Commissioner Judd seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. A tour of 100 Auburn Avenue, the new Arts and Cultural Center proceeded the meeting. II. Old Post Office/Arts and Culture Center Staff Maija McKniglit provided an update and overview of the Arts and Culture Center and an estimated timeline for purchase of the tiuilding from King County. McKnight reported the Building for Gulture funding award in the amount of$200,000 that will go towards renovation costs of the interior. Building for Culture grant was a partnership between 4Culture and the King County Council. The City has entered into contract with PARC Resources in order to assist with the planning process as well as inifial schemafic design of the interior. A generalized overdiew of initial programming ideas were presented and discussion continued. Once the purchase has been finalized, a series of public outreach efforts will be conducted including an open house and various other metliods to ensure the programming reflects community need. III. Public Art into 2016 Staff provided an update on the variety of upcoming public art/community art projects that will be going forward in.2016. The City received a 12,500 grant from 4Culture in support of a "Tech Specific" application that will go towards the creation of a temporary public artwork in the Maker Space within the new Community Center. Thie City applied jointly with knit and textile artist Suzanne Tidwell who will be creating an EL wire illuminated kniUwoven ceiling installafion 4hat will created with youth participants and incorporate opportunities for programming technology. This grant specifically funds temporary works and seeks to encourage the use of new technologies within traditional art forms. This project will be completed in and around the opening of the Community Center and will be hosting teen workshops for participation and creation of aspects of this temporary public artwork. With the completion of the Community Center the commissioned public artwork by Virginia Paquette will be finalized. Selected in 2008 for tlie Community Center, although delayed, fhis artwork will use the cherry wood felled from the Les Gove Park site and become a sculptural relief fhat will surround the fireplace. We look forward to finalizing this project. A variety of summer community art projects are in the works and include BenchMarks and Pianos on Parade. A future agenda item will be a discussion of potential new public art commission projects for the 2016/17 years. Les Gove, new Arts and Culture Center sites were discussed. IV. Updates and Upcoming Events Staff invited commissioners to attend the upcoming State of the City address to be held on Tuesday, February 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Auburn Avenue Theater.
