HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-01-2016 Minutes City of Auburn Arts Commission City Hall Annex, One Main, Conference Ftoom 1 Tuesday, November 1, 2016 Meeting Minutes Present: Nancy Colson, Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Patricia Judd, Heather Longhurst, Colleen Maloney, DeNae McGee, Ronie Sehwend, Donna Smart,Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde,Arts and Events Manager Julie Kreuger, Arts Assistant Mary Ellen Bowers. Excused: Dan Norman, Trudi Moses I. Call to Order,Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Vice Chai�McGee called the meeting to order at 4:33 pm, Commissioner Jensen moved to approve the September 2016 meeting minutes. Cornmissioner Colson seconded the motion, All approved. Motion a�proved. Introduetion of Allison Hyde to Commission, new Arts Coordinator for the City of Auburn. II. 2017 Visual Art Gallery$elections Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the 2017 applications for gallery exhibitions. 86 applications were received and artists were recommended for exhibitions in the three city galleries. Commission approved of the variefy of design and media displayed in the applications and approved of the selections. 111. Granting Sub-Committee Recommendation The City of Aubum receives Local Arts Agency Sustained Support Funding through 4Culture, the King County Culfural Services Agency. The funds are drawn from county Hotel/Motel tax revenues. Each year the 4Culture Board of Director's adjusts the grant awards on a"sliding scale," based on the annual level of tax revenue reeeived. For 2017, the City will allocate a portion of the funding received to go towards supporting programs produced by other community-based arts organizations that serve the citizens of Auburn and/or that raise the profile of Auburn as an arts and entertainment destination. A grant application to request funding was d'istributed and published with the deadline of September 28, 2016. A sub-coinmittee of Commissioners met on Oetober 4,2016 to review the applications made the following recommendations to the full Commission: • Auburn Art Walk-$1,000 s Auburn Food Bank/Empty Bowls-$1,000 o Auburn International Farmers Market-$1,000 • Auburn Symphony Orchestra—Family Outreach and Performances-$2,000 • Aubum Valley Creative Arts, New Gallery Location-$1,000 e Evergreen City Ballet-$500 o Green River Community College, Interurban Center for the Arts-$1,000 • Paci�c Ballroom Dance-$2,000 • Seattle Opera-$1,000 o SCriped Water Poets, Monthly Poetry Events=$1,860 • White River Valley Museum Small Works, Big Presents: The Gift of Art -$2,Q00 Commissioner Nancy Colson moved that the funding amounts granted as recommended; Commissioner Jan Jensen seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. IV. Nomination of Vice-Chair for 2017 _ _ . Krueger noted that the voting for the 2017 Vice=Chair would be needed and asked for nominations for that position. Patrieia Judd nominated Donna Smart to be Vice Chair for 2017. With no other nominations, Nancy Colson moved to approve Smart as Vice Chair. Ca:ry Davidson seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. Krueger noted that three members of the commission will be finishing their respective terms on the Arts Commission. Commissioner Colleen Maloney, Ronie Schwend, and DeNae McGee have served for finro fwll terms which will expire 12/31/2016. We thank them for their service and hope they will continue to be involved in other ways. Commissioners Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, and Donna Smart's frst term expires 12/31/2016; all confirmed that they would like the opportunity to serve a second three-year term. V. Updates and Upcoming Events Krueger distributed a postcacd for the BRAVO performing arts series and encouraged commissioners to attend. Commissioner Smart discussed her trip to Auburn's sister city, Mola di Bari, Italy, and talked about possible future art exchange opportunities and a print studio at the Art Institute there. Krueger updafed fhe Arts Commission on the status of plans for the new Arts &Culture Center in the old Auburn post office. Initial layouts by the architects are in progress. Hyde introduced the new art display space in tfie One Main building and how this fantastic new space will allow for more sculptural and installation-based works. The December Arts Commission meeting will be cancelled,with no formal business to conduct. There being no further business, the meefing adjourned at 5:32 pm Respectfully submitted, Allison Hyde
