Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:03 pm by Chair Bryce Landrud. Additional board members attending were Jan Speer, Arnie Galli and Lonnie Sundal. Also present at the meeting were Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller, Parks Horticulturist Richard Valenti, Environmental Planner Jamie Kelly and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. II. Minutes The April minutes were motioned for approval by Chair Bryce Landrud III. Correspondence/Public Input IV. Old Business Board Chair Landrud reports that he has not heard from the owner of the Oak Tree on 4`" Street. Bryce states that it was great having Randy Bailey attend the April Tree Board meeting. Among items discussed was the willingness and desire to get as many City departments involved with proper tree maintenance and for all to be on the same page. We certainly weren't trying to step on anyone's toes but regarding the codes related to tree care, it seems as if the work the City does on iYs own trees does not always follow these codes. Randy was open to the idea of some pruning tips for their Vegetation Department. We do understand their position as well, from the public safety standpoint, but then citizens complain because the trees look bad. Bryce recommends as a next step to hold a clinic and ask them to attend, not wanting to insult them. City Horticulturist Richard Valenti suggests that we find out when they are planning on trimming trees and meet them at the site to offer pruning tips. Bryce recommends the trees on 8`n Street, where they could explain that with each action taken (with tree trimming) there is a reaction. Bryce would like the Vegetation Department to realize that they may not have to trim all the way down to the trunk. Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller would like to find out where they will be trimming next and arrange to meet them on site to offer assistance. Jan offers to bring donuts or home made cookies. Richard suggests we work together on the R street trees, Mike Miller agrees. V. New Business Chair Landrud attended an April City Council meeting and accepted the Arbor Day Proclamation. Bryce has suggested a Willow tree located at GSA for Heritage Status. Mike Miller would like to ensure that we nominate by September. Bryce will contact GSA. VI. Board Recommendations/Input There was a nice turnout at the Arbor Day tree planting on April 24. Jan Speer did a fantastic job speaking on behalf of the Urban Tree Board. A photo made it into the Auburn Reporter. Board member Jan Speer has a friend who volunteers at the Auburn Valley Humane Society who might be interested in becoming a Tree Board member. Jan Speer thanks the Parks Department for the lovely memorial rock given to the Auburn Valley Humane Society. VII. Department Report Mike Miller reports that the Clean Sweep event on May 4 was a success. There were probabiy 600 volunteers working on 22 different projects. The A Street bridge mural which had been tagged cleaned up nicely. Petpalooza will be held on May 18 and has 150 vendors and 8 food vendors. This is a huge event where 5,000 — 10,000 folks are expected to attend. The Auburn Garden Club has asked Mike to speak at their September meeting. Environmental Planner Jamie Kelly asks if iYs acceptable for the wood chips to be dumped on Western. Mike Miller replies "yes". Jan asks what the plans are for the Ballard Park beds. Mike states they will put sod in. VIII. Adjournment There being no further business, the meeting w s adjourned at 2:42 pm. Approved thisday of 2013 i - Chair AUBURN * MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED
