National League of Cities Recap Members Izquierdo, Riel and Kosaka attended the NLC Conference in Washington DC in March 2017. They each gave a brief summary of their experience at the conference. One of the main focus areas they brought back from the conference is how to become a stronger Junior Council. Some ideas shared were to create a mission statement for the Junior Council, learning and focusing on their role as a council, lobbying, and modifying the structure, such as increasing the amount of monthly meetings to ensure they are able to fulfill their duties. Member Izquierdo shared that attending the NLC Conference made him realize that Auburn has many resources for the youth community—more than other cities around the country. B. Future Activities – 2017 Clean Sweep The Junior Council will be participating in Clean Sweep on April 22nd. Member Izquierdo will coordinate registration. C. Membership Report & Goals The Junior Council will give two presentations to the City Council—one on the National League of Cities Conference and the other on youth homelessness. For the NLC presentation, those that attended the conference will present a mission statement and they will share the idea of having Junior Councilmembers attend regional and local meetings with members of the City Council. The presentation on youth homelessness will give the City Council a youth perspective on the issue. The Junior Council broke out into three groups—each group worked together to create a mission statement for the Junior Council. Council Assistant Manthey collected the mission statements and the Junior Council will brainstorm and select the best one at the next meeting. V.
