Page 1 of 5 Junior City Council January 17, 2017/ 5:00 PM Council Chambers, City Hall MINUTES _______________________________________________________________________ I. CALL TO ORDER A. Roll Call - Sign In Chair Sydney Campbell called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. in Council Chambers, Auburn City Hall, 25 W Main Street in Auburn. Chair Campbell led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance. Junior City Councilmembers present: Sydney Campbell, Tyler Cushing, Jon Kosaka, Matthew St. George, Mary Riel, Justen Hardaway, Karla Cardenas and Diego Izquierdo. Cheyanne Gaines and Brandon Berend were excused. Staff members present: Mayor Nancy Backus, Multimedia Design Technician Sarah St. George, Recreation Coordinator Kjerstin Lange, Deputy Mayor Largo Wales and Council Assistant Antoinette Manthey. B. Announcements There were no announcements. C. Agenda Modifications There were no agenda modifications. II. CONSENT AGENDA Motion by Member Cushing to approve the December 19, 2016 meeting minutes, seconded by Member Hardaway. Motion carried unanimously. 8-0. III. COMMITTEE REPORTS Chamber High School Leadership Scholarship Member Cushing reported that Julia Jordan, President of the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, suggested he work with another employee of the Chamber to get started on the scholarship process. Deputy Mayor Wales works closely with the Chamber and will assist in the scholarship process. CA.A Page 2 of 5 IV. DISCUSSION ITEMS A. Chair & Vice Chair Candidate Presentations The three Junior Councilmembers interested in being elected as Chair were Sydney Campbell, Mary Riel and Brandon Berend. Diego Izquierdo ran for Vice Chair. Each candidate gave a short presentation on why they should be elected as Chair or Vice Chair. Due to illness, Council Assistant Manthey read Member Berend’s presentation on his behalf. Deputy Mayor Wales gave each voting member a ballot and Sarah St. George counted the votes. Results were: Chair: Sydney Campbell Vice Chair: Diego Izquierdo B. 2017 NLC Conference Presentations Four Junior Councilmembers are budgeted to attend the National League of Cities (NLC) Conference in Washington DC, but five Junior Councilmembers were interested in attending. It was suggested the four that are selected to attend be comprised of two members that experienced NLC last year and two members that have not attended. The five members interested were Sydney Campbell, Mary Riel, Diego Izquierdo, Jon Kosaka and Brandon Berend. Each member gave a short presentation on why they should be selected to attend NLC (Deputy Mayor Wales read Member Berend’s presentation on his behalf). Once ballots were counted, the four Junior Councilmembers selected to attend NLC were Sydney Campbell, Mary Riel, Diego Izquierdo and Jon Kosaka. C. Membership Report & Goals The Junior Council received two applicants from Olympic Middle School and they will be appointed at the City Council meeting in February. Representation from West Auburn High School, Cascade Middle and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe are still needed on the Junior Council. Member Izquierdo will work on recruiting members from Cascade Middle School. D. Future Activities Member Izquierdo is working with DeAnna Kilga, Assistant Principal at Auburn High School, to discuss the student attendance and truancy issue at the Junior Council meeting in February. CA.A Page 3 of 5 Chair Sydney reported that she read an article that found students learn about sexual education when it is taught by their peers or from someone slightly older than them, rather than by teachers. Sydney recommended that the Junior Council reach out to their schools and suggest there be a change to the sexual education curriculum. Member Izquierdo shared that he has been working with the school district about the sexual education curriculum and he is going to attempt to get a representative from the Auburn School District to attend a Junior Council meeting to discuss the issue. V. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to come before the Junior City Council, the meeting adjourned at 5:47 p.m. APPROVED this day March, 2017 ______________________ ______________________________ Sydney Campbell, Chair Antoinette Manthey, Council Assistant CA.A Page 4 of 5 AUBURN JUNIOR CITY COUNCIL $1000 Annual Leadership Scholarship The application format is to be a PowerPoint or video submitted flash drive (the drive will not be returned) not to exceed 5 minutes. Please note 25% of the points are awarded for creativity. Submit applications to the office of the deputy mayor on or before May 8, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. · Applicants must be an active member of the Auburn Junior City Council for a minimum of two years; · Be a junior or senior high school; · Provide proof of two hours of public service for each month on council (for the previous two years) and have 80% meeting attendance (excused absences count as full attendance); · Have a post high school plan of attending trade, vocational and/or college. The application should include three parts. Part One: Introduction of applicant addressing qualifications necessary to apply. Part Two: Address the following questions: 1). What are the characteristic of your leadership style. 2). With our current laden environment of social media how do you balance its use and the necessity of personal/social interaction when leading? Part Three: A summary or conclusion for the presentation.
