HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-03-2017 Minutes City of Auburn Ar�s Commission City Hall A►nnex, One Main, Conference Room 1 Tuesday, October 3, 20'i7 Meeting Minutes Present: Nancy Colson, Ca:ry Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Patricia Judd, Kelley Kuhlman, Dan Norman, Donna Smart, Greg Watson Staff: Arts& Events Manager Julie Krueger; Arts Coordinator Allison Wyde; Arts Assistant Mary Ellen Bowers Excused; Amy Sie; Not excused: Trudi Moses, Jan Jensen, Heather Longhurst I. Call to Order, Introductions and App�oval of Minutes Chair Gollnick called the meeting to order at 4:37 pm. After a brief welcome, Chair Gollnick asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the September 5, 2017 qrts Commission meeting. Commissioner Norman moved to approve the September 5, 2017 meeting minutes; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Watson. Chair Gollnick called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously. II. Art on Main a) Arts Coordinator Hyde presented on Art on Main applications for 2018. Hyde noted the jurors who reviewed applications and explained the jury process. There were 50 applicants for 4 spots. Jurors ranked each application from 1-7 with 7 being the highest score. The Commission reviewed a slideshow of fhe top 4 applieants and 2 alternates. Commissioners enthusiastically commented on the high quality of the applications. b) Moved by Commissioner Norman to approve the selected artists and alternates. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Judd. Chair Gollnick called the vote and the motion passed unanimously. III. Wishing Tree Activity Arts Coordinator Hyde introduced the ongoing community art project called"The Wishing Tree." Hyde shared her vision of the tree as a way for members of the community to creatively express their hopes, dreams, and wishes for the community by painting a word or image on metal leaves. Commissioners were invited to make a leaf to add to the Wishing Tree during the meeting, Hyde will continue to provicie opportunities for the public to create their wishes using the metal leaves fhat were made in partnership with Green River College and Greg Bartol of Studio B Design. The leaves will be hung in cascading clusters from a metal tree to create a piece of public art. , IV. Updates/Upcoming Events a) Arts& Events Manager Krueger provided an update related to the Aubum Arts 8�Culture Center including: grant efforts, architectural services and additional phasing for the first floor remodel, and window refurbishing scheduled for spring 2018. b) Krueger noted that Annie, The Musical, opens for a two-week production run at the Aubum Ave. Theater on Friday, October 6. c) Krueger recapped the Iconic Public Art sub-committee's meeting to refine the committee's ideas forthe artist. d) Arts Coordinator Hyde recapped the autumn offerings forArt Classes and discussed marketing strategies and ideas with the Commission. e) Arts Coordinator Hyde shared the plan to review the jury findings and suggestions forthe three oPen calls to artists at the November 7�Arts Commission meeting. The three open calls are; o City of Auburn 2018 Gallery Season 0 2018-21 Auburn Poet Laureate 0 2018 Project Support Grant program � Arts Coordinator Hyde also recapped the Aubum ArtWalk and the great feedback she received on the Arts & Culture Center that evening. g) Commissioner Colson invited everyone to attend the upcoming Auburn Symphony Orchestra Opening Goncert`'Rodeo& New World Symphony" on October 8, 2017 at 2:30pm. There being no further business, a motion was made by Commissioner C.olson to adjourn, which was seconded by Commissioner Watson. Chair Gollnick called the vote, and the motion passed.
