Call to Order, Approval of Minute.s and In.troductions a) Chair Smart called the meeting to order at 4:33 pm. b) Chair Smart briefly welcomed Gommissioners to the meeting, and asked for a motion to approve the minutes from tHe April 3, 2018 Arts Commission meefing. Commissioner Jensen moved to approve the April 3, 2018 meeting minutes; tlie motion was seconded by Commissioner Colson. Chair Smart called 4he vote, and the motion passed unanimously. II. ReView of Sculpture Gallery Applications a) Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde went over the agenda for the meeting, reminding Commissioners that they would be reviewing and selecting 10 sculptures for the 2018-19 Downtown Sculpfu�e Gallery. Applications were accepted thro.ugh the CaFE system this year which resulted in a stream-lined process for staff. A total of 27 eligible artists submitted 66 eligible sculptures for the Commissioner's consideration. Hyde reviewed the available locations, and tfie limitations of each location, noting that the eligible sculptures had been sorted into categories which matched the best possible placemeM for each category. b) Hyde led Commissioners through a brief review of all of the eligible sculptures, asking them to hold comments, but allowing time for Comm,issioners to take nofes: Hyde then asked Commissioners to indicate which sculptures in each category they preferred by a raised hand vote. Discussion was had about the merits and concems for the top scorers in each category. c) Commissioners selected ten sculptures to be displayed. Three additional sculptures were selected as altemates, to be invited to display in the event of unavailability of any of the top ten selected sculptures. d) An additional sculpture was identified as desirable for the program. Arts & Events Manager Julie Krueger suggested that the artist might be invited to show this sculpture at the Game Farm Park location that had previous�y displayed "The Penguins". The idea was met with enthusiastic agreement by the Commissioners. Arfs Coordinator Hyde will contact the artist. III. UpdateslUpcoming Events a. Arts Coordinator Hyde gave an update on pgrtnanent placement for two sculptures previously purchased by the City as part of the Downtown Sculpture Gallery Rrogram. Plin4hs haye been poured for Hawk (2015-16), at the entrance to Game Farm Park at 3030 R St. East; and Joie de Vivre (2016-17) on the front plaza at the Auburn Community and Event Center at 910 Ninth St. East: Installation will take place in the nearfutu�e. b. Arts & Events Manager Julie Krueger announced the near-completion of several large metal car�ots that were created by Greg Bartol and 4he artists at Studio B. The carrots will be installed around small deciduous trees in Les Gove Park at the former Big Daddy site in anticipation of the temporary relocation of the Auburn International Farmers Marke.t. The carrots will be installed during the month of May. c. Hyde recapped the current status of the Iconic Public Artwork commission with Peter Reiquam. The first portion of the contract has been submitted to Financing. Nezt steps include further schematic designs; engineering and approval before moving on to fabrication. d. Krueger announced completion by staff of a grant application to Bloomberg Philanthropies in the amount o.f fiye hundred and fifty thousand dollars. If guccessful in acquiring this highly competRiVe grant, the City would be closer to moving forward on plans for an Artists Alley project in the alley between the Aubum Arts 8�Cuiture Center and theAubum Avenue Theater. e. Krueger announced the upcoming event "hello 4Culture" on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 10:OOam-1:OOpm at Zola's Cafe. 4Culture staff will be holding office hours in Aubum to hear your questions, ideas, frustrations, plans, and more. Free, drop-in, no registration required. Staff will forward the email to Gommissioners. f. Hyde announced the upcoming Auburn Art&Wne V1/alk which will be held on Friday, May 11 from 530-8:30pm. The City wiil once again open the Arts & Culture Cente�to participate in the Art Walk, hosting three artists inside, and one artist outside. Hyde will also lead a "Sculpture Walk" duririg the Art Walk, inViting 4 artists to walk the Downtown Sculpture Gallery and talk about the process and inspirations for their sculptures. Hyde asked for volunteers from the Arts Commission fo help staff the Arts 8 Culture Center while she is away from the building during the Sculpture Walk. g. Krueger recapped the successful recentindonesian Batik Fabric PaiMing class. h. Hyde.announced upcoming art classes- Fused Glass Pendants with local artist Di Faria; Needle Fetting with Janet Wang; and Salish Style Paddle Carving with Kenneth Greg Watson. i. Hyde noted that the artist selected for the Mary Olson Farm Artist Residency, Michelle Lassaline, has accepted the offer and is excited to be under contract for the residency to take place this June and July at the farm. j. Hyde announced the inaugural Auburn Studio Tour to take place June 30, 2018. Participating artists will include Susan Lochner and John Harris, Marita Dingus, Studio B artist group and Michelle Lassaline, the first annual Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence. k. Commissioner Colson gave an updafe of the Aubum Symphony Orchestra's concert. directed by Anthony Spain, "The Planets—A Multimedia Extravaganza."A special Visual accompaniment was choreog[aphed by Adrian 1Nyard using NASA image.s of planets in our solar system, galaxies, and beyond. The event was described as "amazing" with "lots of energy from the audience" and "a grand success!" I. Commissioner Colson also announced an upcoming concert series "Sunsets at Mary Olson Farm" at 7:OOpm on Thursdays -July5, 19 and 26. m. Commissioner Longhurst announced the Pacifc Baliroom Dance Spring Concert- "Rise" a show full of energy and elegance. Dancers will delight audiences with this production that rivals a professional show you would see in Seattle. Performances are on June 1, at 7:OOpm and June 2, at 2:OOpm and 7:OOp.m. Longhurst noted that Pacific Baliroom Dance would like to provide complimentary ticKets to members of the Arts Commission. n. Hyde commented on the well-attended event "Poets on the Ave" held Friday, April 27. Auburn's new Poet Laureate, Susan Landgraf, recited a new poem she had written entitled "Auburn" and was joined by Auburn's past Poets Laureate, and other poets from the community. Poets did readings of their own poetry throughout the evening. Hyde noted that it was a successful event. IV. Adjoum There being no further business, a motion was made by Commissioner Leighty to adjourn, which was seconded by Commissioner Jensen, Chair Smart called the vote, and the motion passed.
