HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-13-2018City of Auburn Arts Commission Tuesday, August 13, 2018 Meeting Minutes Present: Anne Baunach, Jan Jensen, Kelley Kuhlman, Eydie Leighty, Heather Longhurst, Amy Sie, Greg Watson Staff: Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde; Arts Assistant Mary Ellen Bowers Excused: Nancy Colson, Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Sirichanh Sisavatdy, and Donna Smart I. Call to Order Kelley Kuhlman a. Call to Order – In the absence of Chair Smart, the meeting was called to order by Vice- Chair Kuhlman at 4:19 PM. b. Approval of minutes - Kuhlman briefly welcomed Commissioners to the meeting, and asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the May 1, 2018 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Jensen moved to approve the May 1, 2018 meeting minutes; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Watson. Vice-Chair Kuhlman called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously. II. Downtown Sculpture Gallery Allison Hyde a. Presentation of People’s Choice Award results - Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde announced the results of the voting for the Downtown Sculpture Gallery People’s Choice Award. “The Dress” by Studio B won the $500 Award. b. Presentation of Purchase Award options – Arts Coordinator Hyde reviewed the procedure, and options for deciding the 2017-18 Purchase Award for the Downtown Sculpture Gallery. The budget sets a cap of $10,000 for the purchase award. i) Before a Power Point presentation of all eligible sculptures was reviewed, Hyde reminded Commissioners that: (1) they have the option to choose to put the budgeted Purchase Award toward the maintenance of the current Public Art collection if they so choose. (2) two sculptures were not eligible for the award: (a) Jacob Novinger’s sculpture “Head Above Water” was permanently damaged and has been removed from display (b) Mark Stevenson’s “The Old Rooster” is priced beyond our purchase price-cap and is not eligible for the award. (3) Commissioners were asked to consider the siting, longevity and upkeep of possible purchases c. Discussion and selection of 2017-18 Purchase Award – After discussion about each of the eligible sculptures, a vote was taken by paper ballot with each commissioner ranking their top 3 choices. i) The votes were tallied and “Rusted Iridescence” by Dale Reiger and Scott Alexander was selected, with Sharon Agnor’s “Living Water” selected as an alternate. ii) Commissioners discussed the original intention of the artists that “Rusted Iridescence” should be displayed with internal lighting, and feel strongly that this intention should be honored. iii) Commissioner Leighty moved that “Rusted Iridescence” should be purchased by the City for the Permanent Art Collection with the provision that it be displayed with internal lighting. In the event that permanent siting does not allow for internal lighting, the purchase award should then go to the alternate. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Watson. The motion passed unanimously. III. Adjourn - Kelley Kuhlman a. There being no further business, Commissioner Jensen moved to adjourn the meeting, Commissioner Baunach seconded the motion, Vice-Chair Kuhlman called the vote, the motion passed.
