HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-04-2018 MinutesCity of Auburn Arts Commission Tuesday, September 4, 2018 Meeting Minutes Present: Anne Baunach, Nancy Colson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Eydie Leighty, Sirichanh Sisavatdy, Donna Smart, and Greg Watson Staff: Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde; Arts & Events Manager, Julie Krueger Excused: Kelley Kuhlman, Heather Longhurst, and Amy Sie; Not Excused: Cary Davidson Call to Order Call to Order – Chair Smart was present via speakerphone and the meeting was called to order at 4:30 PM. Approval of minutes – Chair Smart briefly welcomed Commissioners to the meeting, and asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the August 13, 2018 Arts Commission special meeting. Commissioner Leighty moved to approve the August 13, 2018 meeting minutes; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Gollnick. Chair Smart called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously.   Jesse Swickard’s “Linked” for Possible Donation Presentation of sculpture donation - Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the details of an artwork offered for donation to the City of Auburn’s public art collection, including the artist’s Letter of Intent, past art experience and resume and projected costs. Discussion – The Commission discussed the sculpture, projected costs, appropriateness for the collection and possible sites for placement. Voting – After thorough discussion about possible donation, Commissioner Colson moved that the Arts Commission approve that the artwork “Linked” by Jesse Swickard be recommended to City Council for accession into the public art collection. Commissioner Leighty seconded the motion. Chair Smart called the vote, and the motion passed. Downtown Sculpture Gallery Purchase Award Placement Presentation of possible sculpture locations - Arts Coordinator Hyde presented some possible past options for sculpture gallery locations including the Arts & Culture Center and other pedestrian friendly areas where people could see and admire the detail of the piece. The Arts & Culture Center was discussed as the favorite site for the “Rusted Iridescence” sculpture pending future ideas and discussion after determining options, costs and feasibility. Discussion and ideas of sites – Commissioner Leighty suggested Lea Hill Park as a possible future site for artwork. Commissioner Colson suggested the 124th Street roundabout as a possible future site for the “Linked” sculpture if accepted into the collection. Arts & Events Manager Krueger suggested the median by the Auburn outlet Collection as a possible site for future artwork. Commissioner Leighty also suggested the backside of the GSA building near the railroad tracks as a possible site for artwork. Staff will investigate suggested options with other City departments to determine Right-of-Way permissions and get input for sightline restrictions. Updates/Upcoming Events Upcoming Call to Artist Juries - Arts Coordinator Hyde informed the Arts Commission that there were two calls to artists coming up and asked who might be interested in participating on juries. Commissioners Smart, Gollnick, Sisavatdy and Leighty volunteered to participate on these selection panels. Sculpture Gallery – Arts Coordinator Hyde informed the Arts Commission that the Downtown Sculpture Gallery de-installation and installation of new works was taking place the following week, September 10 – 14th. Auburn Art Walk - Arts Coordinator Hyde informed the Arts Commission that the Auburn Art & Wine Walk was coming up on September 14th and that the Arts & Culture Center would be featured as an art, wine and music venue. Arts Commissioners were encouraged to attend. Arts & Culture Center Window Restoration – Arts & Events Manager Krueger informed the Arts Commission that the historic windows at the Arts & Culture Center are currently under restoration and coming along well. 2018 Bravo Performing Arts - Arts & Events Manager Krueger distributed the 2018-2019 BRAVO season brochure and discussed the upcoming performances. Auburn Valley Creative Arts Update – Commissioner Gollnick informed the Arts Commission about how the AVCA group will have a pop-up gallery space in the villa section of a building by the Lowes store in Auburn, starting at the end of September through Christmas of 2018. Auburn Symphony Orchestra – Commissioner Colson noted the ASO has a new Executive Director, Rachel Woosley, and informed the Arts Commission about the upcoming concert on October 14th titled “Pines of Rome” which will be the new conductor’s first big performance. Peter Reiquam “Crow with Fries” Update – Commissioner Jansen requested an update on the progress with the public artwork. Staff notified the Arts Commission that there had been a delay in final engineering work during Phase II of the contract, and that the artist is seeking a new engineer to complete the work as soon as possible. “Hoppy” at Geaux Brewing Update – Commissioner Jensen inquired about the status of a possible purchase of the Jenny Ellsworth sculpture titled “Hoppy” by Geaux Brewing. Arts Coordinator Hyde informed everyone that there was no news, but the artist was in touch with the possible buyer for the piece. Corporate Sponsorship Question – Commissioner Jensen inquired about any corporate sponsorship opportunities within Auburn’s arts programming. Arts Coordinator Hyde and Arts & Events Manager Krueger responded that there was little sponsorship opportunity within the visual arts, but that it was a consideration for fundraising at the Arts & Culture Center. Lao Community Upcoming Events – Commissioner Sisavatdy informed and invited everyone to the upcoming women’s Lao cultural gathering on September 22nd with details to come. She also shared that there is a fundraising event on September 8th for homes lost in a tragic dam disaster in Laos, details also to follow by email. Adjourn There being no further business, Commissioner Jensen moved to adjourn the meeting, Commissioner Colson seconded the motion, Chair Smart called the vote, the motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 5:35 PM.
