Tuesday, January 8, 2019 Meeting Minutes

I. Call to Order
a. Call to Order— Chair Kuhlman was unable to attend. In her absence, Vice Chair Leighty
called the meeting to order at 5:31 PM.
b. Approval of minutes —Vice Chair Leighty asked for a motion to approve the minutes
from the November 6, 2018 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Baunach moved
that the minutes be accepted as written. Commissioner Gollnick seconded the motion.
Vice Chair Leighty called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously.
c. Introductions —Vice Chair Leighty welcomed the Arts Commission and Parks Board
members to the meeting. Parks, Arts & Recreation Director, Daryl Faber explained that
the concurrent informational meeting was being held to present information on a
proposed project that is of interest to both bodies. Director Faber introduced Michael
Hassen, Chair of the Parks Board and asked him to call the concurrent Parks Board
meeting to order. Introductions were made of all City staff, Arts Commission, and Parks
Board members.
II. Auburn Arts Alley Presentation
a) Project overview - Director Faber presented overview and background information
about the proposed project to enhance the rundown alley between the future Auburn
Arts & Culture Center and the Auburn Avenue Theater. Faber presented a slideshow
and introduced Art Consultant, Kathleen Fruge Brown. Fruge Brown was selected
through the 4Culture Creative Consultancies program to collaborate with the City's Arts
department to prepare an application for grant funding for the project.
b) Kathleen Fruge Brown - Fruge Brown thanked those present and explained the
process by which she is gathering information about the community's hopes and visions
for the proposed project, including an interactive Pinterest page online where community
members can post images, poetry, and other information that helps to express their
wishes for the Auburn Arts Alley. Fruge Brown opened the floor for comments and ideas
about the alley project. She then went over the procedure for applying for the 4Culture
grant, noting an application deadline at the end of February. Arts & Events Manager
Krueger noted that a link to the Pinterest page is on the City website, and will be sent to
those in attendance, as well as to community members via Govdelivery.
Ill. "Crow With Fries" - Iconic Public Art Update
a. Update -Arts Coordinator Hyde described a recent visit to the artist's studio and
updated the Arts Commission on the progress of the sculpture. Hyde invited
Commissioners to visit the artist's studio on Wednesday, January 16th. Commissioners
were asked to contact Hyde if interested in attending.
b. Manager Krueger noted plans are being made for events surrounding the "landing" of
the iconic sculpture, with an installation date projected for early June 2019.
IV. Updates/Upcoming Events
a. Galleries — Coordinator Hyde reviewed the new exhibitions in the City's art galleries.
b. Preservation grant —Hyde announced the successful application for a $3,000
Preservation Sustained Support grant from 4Culture.
c. Arts & Culture Center Demo— Manager Krueger informed the commission that interior
demolition work is underway at the Arts & Culture Center in preparation for updates that
need to be made. Demolition will be funded by a portion of the 4Culture grant funding
that is set to expire.
d. Funding — Krueger noted that staff continue to work toward finding funding for updates
and repairs to the Arts & Culture Center, including a capital request with the State.
e. Arts and Heritage Day— Commissioner Sisavatdy invited commissioners to the annual
Arts and Heritage Day at the capitol on February 6, 2019.
f. Capital request— Parks Board member Bailey Stober requested information about all
capital requests from the Parks, Arts and Recreation department so commissioners and
board members can advocate for the projects with elected officials.
g. BRAVO season — Krueger invited those present to look through the latest BRAVO
Performing Arts season brochure and distributed copies to those in attendance.
h. Thanks — Hyde, Krueger and Director Faber joined in thanking those in attendance.
V. Adjourn
a. There being no further business, Commissioner Baunach moved to adjourn the
meeting, Commissioner Gollnick seconded the motion, Vice Chair Leighty called the
vote, the motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 6:20 PM.
