HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-02-2019 Minutes Parks and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday, April 2, 2019 5:30 p.m. Auburn Community & Event Center I. Call to Order 5:35 pm Present were members Michael Hassen (chair), Katie Helton, James Jeyaraj, Mike Palko-Dean, Lisa Russell. Department staff present were Parks Director Daryl Faber and Secretary Julie Mehl. II. Minutes The March minutes were approved. III. Committee Member Input Mike Palko-Dean asked when the restrooms would open at Game Farm Park: April 15. James Jeyaraj asked about the shelter at Isaac Evans Park. Daryl shared photos with the board and noted a finish date for the week of April 22nd. IV. Correspondence/Public Input V. Old Business Daryl reminded the board of the upcoming Arbor Day tree planting to be held April 18th at 9:30 am at Isaac Evans Park. VI. New Business VII. Department Report (Faber) The Alleyway Update: The City won a grant for $20,000 from King County. Daryl has met and presented with the Auburn Downtown Association and the Business Improvement Area. We’ve received $160,000 to date for the project. We are working on ideas with the artist, and youth will be involved with the lantern portion of the project. The City currently has a grant request for $500,000 for the Arts & Culture Center project, and another grant request for $500,000 for the riverfront property on 104th. 40 people have signed up for The “Celebration of the Crow” art exhibition on May 1. Clean Sweep: We should have approximately 600 volunteers to work on 18 projects. The event starts off with a pancake breakfast hosted by The Kiwanis Club at 7:30 am, then on to assigned sites. City will receive $150,000 from the King County Parks Levy. If it passes, that amount will double. The funds will be allocated to eligible cities in the south sound area. More affluent cities won’t be eligible to apply. New exhibit “Hometown Teams” by the Smithsonian begins May 4 at the White River Valley Museum. The Porter Family brought in a photo of Indian Tom, Daryl would like to update the wording on the signage at Indian Tom Park. “Friend of white people” has incurred comments from citizens who are offended by the sign. VIII. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 6:05 pm.
