I. Call to Order
The Urban Tree Board met at Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation at 2:00 pm.
Tree board members attending were Board Chair Bryce Landrud, Members Tanya Galat, Jan Speer. Also
present at the meeting were Parks Planning Manager Jamie Kelly, Parks Horticulturist Richard Valenti,
Parks Maintenance Worker Trent Mannon and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl.
II. Minutes
The April minutes were approved.
III. Correspondence/Public Input
Board Chair Landrud shares the golf course conditions have really improved the playability at the
Auburn Golf Course.
IV. Old Business
G St SE: The planting has been cancelled due to lack of neighborhood participation.
Mason Bee houses: Secretary Julie Mehl scouted some locations for the Mason Bee Houses
which include Les Gove Park, Community Garden on 4th, Dorothy Bothell Park, Game Farm
Wilderness Park and the Backyard Idea Garden. They will be installed this week.
Heritage Tree: The board continues the search for a Heritage Tree nomination in the South
end of Auburn or in the Lea Hill area.
V. New Business
The board welcomes new member Tanya Galat.
VI. Board Recommendations/Input
Board member Jan Speer suggested a Red Horse Chestnut for the 2020 Arbor Day Tree.
VII. Department Report
Parks Maintenance worker Trent Mannon began pruning trees this winter at many south end parks. He
has pruned roughly 400 trees. Trent also attended a Tree ID class in April at the UW Arboretum and
thoroughly enjoyed it. Trent’s goal is to become a certified arborist and the process will take about 1.5
years.
