Parks and Recreation Board Meeting
Minutes
Tuesday, June 4, 2019
5:30 p.m.
Auburn Community & Event Center
I. Call to Order 5:30 pm
Present were members Katie Helton, James Jeyaraj, Wayne Osborne, Mike Palko-Dean, Lisa Russell.
Department staff present were Parks Director Daryl Faber, and Secretary Julie Mehl.
II. Minutes
The May minutes were approved.
III. Committee Member Input
Board member Osborne shared the “Crow with Fries” dedication had an excellent turnout.
IV. Correspondence/Public Input
West Hill resident John Bowler attends for an update on the West Hill lake. Daryl has looked at parking
on W Street, city will survey. Also will consider park design and possible clearing project for an Eagle
Scout group, perhaps adding a few benches. Ingress & egress will likely be via W St.
V. Old Business
Metal detecting: The board unanimously favored the wording in Lakewood’s metal detecting policy. The
new policy will go through a study session, then to City Council for approval.

VII. Department Report (Faber)
The volcano toy at Sunset Park will be replaced with a climbing toy this week.
The picnic shelter at Isaac Evans park is finished and is being rented.
The infield turf project at Brannan Park is in progress including different size, portable mounds for 60 –
90’ base distance.
The permit process is underway for the sandy beach area off 104th St, it will go through SEPA which is a
time consuming process.
The Artist Alley project next to the Auburn Ave Theater will begin near the end of summer and will
include lanterns and an Indian style quilt.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm.
