HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-01-2019 Minutes City of Auburn Arts Commission Tuesday, October 1, 2019 Meeting Minutes Present: Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Pat Judd, Kelley Kuhlman, Eydie Leighty, Amy Sie, Sirichanh Sisavatdy, Pam Smith, Kenneth Greg Watson Staff: Arts & Events Manager, Julie Krueger; Arts Coordinator, Allison Hyde; Arts Assistant, Mary Ellen Bowers Excused: Kelly Gordon Unexcused: Cary Davidson I. Call to Order a. Call to Order— Chair Kuhlman called the meeting to order at 4:30 PM. b. Approval of minutes —Chair Kuhlman briefly welcomed Commissioners to the meeting, and asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the August 6, 2019 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Jensen moved that the minutes be accepted, Commissioner Gollnick seconded the motion. Chair Kuhlman called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously. II. 2020 Art Gallery Applications a. Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the 2020 applications for gallery exhibitions. 103 applications were received. Eight jurors, with representatives from: the community, local artists, past program participants, arts administrators, arts commissioners and city staff, scored each entry. Hyde presented the recommendations for exhibitions in the three City galleries including 5 alternate artists to be invited in the event of cancellations. Commissioner Leighty moved that the Commission accept the variety of design and media recommended by Hyde and the jury. Commissioner Judd seconded the motion. Chair Kuhlman called the vote, the motion passed unanimously. III. 2020 Art on Main Gallery Applications a) Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the Art on Main application recommendations for 2020. Hyde explained the jury process and noted that 8 jurors, including local artists, past program participants, arts administrators, arts commissioners and city staff, reviewed applications. Hyde thanked members of the Arts Commission who had served on the jury. There were 62 applicants for 4 exhibit opportunities, a large increase over last year. The Commission reviewed a slideshow of the 4 top rated applicants who will be creating work for the space, as well as the top 2 alternates. b) Moved by Commissioner Jensen to approve the selected artists and alternates. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Gollnick. Chair Kuhlman called the vote and the motion passed unanimously. IV. News and Updates: a. New Downtown Sculpture Gallery— Hyde invited commissioners to take a walk in downtown Auburn, and to stop by Game Farm Park, to see the sculptures in the Downtown Sculpture Gallery installed in early September. b. Utility Box Art Wraps Installed — Hyde recapped the collaborative efforts between the City's Arts Department and Code Compliance Department to license and install vinyl wraps on 16 utility boxes throughout the city. Sixteen designs from ten local artists were selected from 54 applicants. There is an article in the Fall 2019 edition of Auburn Magazine, as well as a page on the city website with details of each of the wraps and the locations of the utility boxes. c. F St Mural update — Krueger updated commissioners on progress of the mural. This, too is a collaborative effort between Arts and Code Compliance. Artist Nick Goettling's design has been approved, paperwork completed and he will begin painting soon. d. Arts Alley updates— Krueger updated commissioners on progress of the Arts Alley project. The City has received a Certificate of Appropriateness from the King County Landmarks Commission for the planned project. The City is currently gathering bids on the seating bench portion of the project. Artist Kathleen Fruge Brown has been working with members of the Muckleshoot Tribe to identify patterns that can be used in the mosaics she is designing for the bench-seating portion of the project. Brown has also been busy collecting ideas from the community to use on the lighting shades for the alley. e. 4Culture Landmarks Capital grant application — rehabilitation of flooring — Hyde informed commissioners that the City has submitted an application for funding for rehabilitation of the terrazzo and hard-wood floors in the Arts & Culture Center. By rehabilitating the floors we hope to retain some of the original character of the building. The application period is now closed , 4Culture will announce awards in December. f. New BRAVO series— Krueger briefed commissioners on 2019-20 BRAVO season that is currently underway. Upcoming events during the month of October and early November include The Rocky Horror Show by the Auburn Community Players and Ron Stubbs - Rock and Roll Hypnotist. g. Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence— Hyde recapped the Artist in Residence (AIR) program at Mary Olson Farm. Artist Elise Koncsek will show some art work she created during her residency at the Cheryl Sallee Gallery in November. Hyde will work with city staff and our city attorney to amend wording in portions of the AIR contract before the next call to artists. h. Arts Commission Vacancies & Term Expirations— Krueger noted that terms for Commissioners Davidson, Jensen, and Gollnick will end on January 1, 2020. Additionally, Commissioner Kuhlman has indicated a need to step down, and Commissioner Baunach's position remains unfilled. Following established procedure, the Mayor's office will post notice of the openings. After reviewing all applications, the Mayor will make recommendations to City Council for appointment of new Commissioners. i. South King County Arts Commissioners Summit— Commissioner Sie gave a recap of the summit and expressed her interest in following up on two of the major themes presented at the meeting; Helping to Build Artist Communities, and Arts Education in Schools. j. Auburn Symphony Collaborative program — Commissioner Smith informed commissioners about a collaborative program by the symphony to include student artwork from Auburn School District elementary schools in their upcoming program. 400 entries will be used in the symphony's upcoming performance of Pictures at an Exhibition. Students could not attend the symphony rehearsal at the PAC on Oct. 11 because it was a waiver day (non-school day); the official symphony performance is October 13, 2019 at 2:30PM. Commissioners are encouraged to attend. k. Crow lighting — Commissioner Jensen asked for an update on the blue up-lighting on the sculpture Crow with Fries. Hyde and Krueger updated the commission, the artist knows of the issue and continues to explore solutions. V. Adjourn a.
