Parks and Recreation Board Meeting
Minutes
Wednesday, September 5, 2019
5:30 p.m.
Auburn Community & Event Center
I. Call to Order 5:30 pm
Present were members: Michael Hassen (chair), James Jeyaraj, Wayne Osborne, Mike Palko-Dean, Lisa
Russell. Department staff present were Parks Director Daryl Faber, Parks Planning Manager Jamie Kelly
and Secretary Julie Mehl.
II. Minutes
The June minutes were approved.
III. Committee Member Input
Member Lisa Russell notifies the board she has moved to Edgewood, she does work in Auburn which
qualifies her to remain a board member.
Members agree the golf course is in excellent shape, there have been sightings of a black bear, 2 deer,
mink and coyote.

Director Faber hands out Park Board policy #1130 “Naming Parks”. The Edgeview neighborhood has two
parks needing to be named. The board determined that Kersey A park will be Evergreen Park, and
Kersey B will be Edgeview Park.
Six years ago the Parks Dept. smoking policy was updated to not allow smoking in parks. Many cities
have converted their non-smoking policy to city code. As a code, officers will be able to approach
smokers in parks and let them know it’s not allowed. The board approves a ‘no smoking in parks’ Auburn
City Code.
VII. Department Report (Faber / Kelly)
Summer camp participants reached 2000 this summer, which is up 122 from last year. Largely due to
the new Mix & Match Summer Camp option.
The Brannan #1 infield turf project was finished in July. The Game Farm #4 lighting project will begin in
November.
50 yds of gravel was spread at the West Auburn lake. The neighbors have decided it’s an acceptable
addition. An oversized porch type swing, benches and picnic tables will be installed.
The process has begun for the 104th riverfront project. Parks Planning Manager Jamie Kelly will meet
with the planning department to discuss details. Design should be final in early 2020, construction
should begin summer 2020.
The project at the museum is wrapping up, they have had some challenges but should be finished within
the next two weeks.
The Arts Alley project will include a sitting wall, mosaic tiles, and lighting toward the stage. Have secured
a ROW permit, curbs were cut last month, getting concrete bids. Project to be complete summer 2020.
The F St mural project will be complete before winter and is a large rendition of a children’s pillow fight.
The utility box wraps have been completed, the designs are original works from local artists.
