Department staff present were Parks Director Daryl Faber, and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. Minutes The November minutes were moved for approval by Wayne Osborne, Lisa Russell seconds. Committee Member Input Park Board Member Wayne Osborne reports that neighbors of Scootie Brown Park have been cleaning up drug needles in the area (excluding the City owned portion on 8th St.). Wayne Osborne asks about the picnic shelter at Isaac Evans Park which had a tree fall onto it during a recent windstorm. Director Faber shares that we are still under contract with the architect and it will be re-designed. Wayne also asks about the pricing of our picnic shelters, the pricing appears to be inconsistent. Daryl to review. Correspondence/Public Input Old Business Auburndale II – King County does not think the project idea to build homes at Auburndale II would be approved. The rules state that land cannot be used without replacing the same size of land with the same amenities. New Business Director Faber states there is a sub-committee discussing local trails who would like to re-approve a new agreement between King County and Puget Sound Energy related to the Inter-Urban Trail. The board agrees a letter of support from Board Chair Michael Hassen is appropriate. Department Report (Faber) The soccer field at Brannan is nearly complete except two sections of wall. Project should be complete in the next few weeks. The Arbor Day tree planting will coincide with the grand opening of the soccer field. The walls of the restroom at Les Gove Park were raised this week. This project is federally funded. The Les Gove Crescent project is out for bid and closes in over a week. It includes the blue light towers installed around the path and we hope to have the job finished by the end of summer. It’s been a monumental week regarding grant approvals! Two teen program grants were awarded for outdoor activities including 27 mountain bikes and a trailer. This will expand our outdoor pursuit programs. Will also purchase snow shoes and add an $18 per hour position. If we are awarded the state grant, it will include $90,000 over two years. The White River Valley Museum will be converting a two bay garage into a classroom & lunch area to accommodate touring students more efficiently. We are working on getting the city’s match for the lighting on Game Farm Park field #4. Brannan baseball field #1 is in process of being converted to turf. Board members Lisa Russell and Wayne Osborne participated in a sub-committee which helped select a piece of public art for Les Gove Park. The Call to Artists garnered 32 applicants for a large scale, engaging piece with a “wow” factor. The project of a black crow with fries was selected and will soon be reviewed by Auburn City Council. The Auburn International Farmers Market will be moving to Les Gove Park temporarily. At the Sound Transit location, the attendance has decreased and the farmers and volunteers have become frustrated. The new residential construction would also be an issue at the Sound Transit location. The Avery Huffman memorial bench has been installed at Lakeland Hills Park. The family & friends of Avery Huffman would like to name the playground “Avery’s Playground”. A policy would need to be created to allow it. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 pm.
