Parks and Recreation Board Meeting
Minutes
Tuesday, May 3, 2022
5:30 p.m.
Virtual and In Person at Community & Event Center
I. Call to Order 5:31 pm
Present were Chair Michael Hassen; Members Peter Di Turi, Katie Helton, Wayne Osborne. Department
staff present were Parks Director Daryl Faber, Recreation Manager Kevin Witte and Administrative
Assistant Julie Mehl.
II. Minutes
The March minutes were approved.
III. Committee Member Input
The board reviewed the Downtown Plaza site plan, project to be completed by late Fall.
IV. Correspondence/Public Input
Citizen Adam Braun requested one or more pesticide free parks. Isaac Evans, Auburndale or Cedar Lanes
are being considered.
V. Old Business
The Arts & Culture Center project included removal of walls downstairs for sprinkler installation, cupola
leak repair, roof work.
To date, we have received two food truck applications.
VI. New Business
SCJ Consultants will update the PROS plan, which allows the City to apply for numerous grants. They will
attend events and visit parks to evaluate the needs in our park system.
Thaniel Gouk, new Parks Planning Manager begins Monday, May 9.
VII. Department Report
The insurance claim is in process for the Auburn Ave Theater. A grant has been submitted for 2.5 million
for improvement or acquisition.
The Peter Cotton Trail event had 1100 participants and 85 prizes were awarded. We have received many
positive comments.
SEEK Grant includes 3 programs; Up & Running, Mobile Rec and full week camp scholarships. Mobile Van
will be at Special Events and free lunch programs.
Upcoming events include Youth Fishing Derby at Mill Pond May 7, Special Needs Fishing Derby May 14,
Senior Fishing Derby June 4.
The City received a $40,000 Mid Sound Fisheries Grant for tree planting at Isaac Evans & Fenster parks.
The Inter-Urban trail paving project will hopefully begin this summer.
Forest Villa, Fulmer and Auburndale parks will receive upgrades. The pump track at Cedar Lanes Park
will go out to bid soon, for use this summer.
Community Center parking lot asphalt job to begin early May.
Safety in parks has improved over the last two years, we’re now giving coaches keys to restrooms at
Brannan to avoid homeless interactions. There were no complaints after Peter Cotton Trail event.
