Chair Menzia called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. Members present: Chair Waylon Menzia, Vice Chair Jonathan Mulenga, Member Janine Park, and Member Briseyda Sandate. Staff present: Deputy Mayor James Jeyaraj, Director of Administration Dana Hinman, DEI Manager Brenda Goodson-Moore, and Recreation Coordinator Keisha Taylor. II. ANNOUNCEMENTS —There were no announcements. III. AGENDA MODIFICATIONS—There were no agenda modifications. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES • Motion by Vice Chair Mulenga to approve the March 3, 2022 meeting minutes, second by Member Park., Motion carried unanimously. V. JUNETEENTH/YOUTH FESTIVAL Ms. Goodson-Moore presented ideas about planning for a Juneteenth festival. A firm date has not been set as June 19th may have some conflicts in the community on that date. It was shared that,other groups are interested in helping with the planning, the first planning meeting will take in the near future. Vice Chair Mulenga suggested having Black Student Unions (BSU)from other schools join together and help with planning the Juneteenth festival, and he also asked about a follow-up to last year's Youth Town Hall and focus on equity. Member Park shared that Auburn Riverside has a BSU and she will ask if they want to participate in the planning of the Juneteenth festival. \ Page 3 of 4 i e Vice Chair Mulenga asked about what the early vision of the festival will look like; Ms. Goodson-Moore shared some ideas such as musical entertainment, children's activities, and African storytelling. Vice Chair Mulenga suggested working with the Youth Equity Stewardship (YES) group on some poetry readings, and suggested adding speakers and authors. Chair Menzia offered to connect Ms. Goodson-Moore with the YES program. Chair Menzia suggested adding a PRIDE event and Ms. Goodson-Moore offered some ideas and planning support. Ms. Taylor also offered her support to the Jr. City Council's activities and events. VI. DISCUSSION Chair Menzia announced that the next Jr. Council meeting onMarch 24th will be in- person/hybrid. A discussion took place about wearing masks at the meetings and it was decided masks would be worn the first few meetings. Deputy Mayor Jeyaraj gave a City Council update which included recent proclamation and resolutions, installing photo enforcement in school zones,'and the Park, Arts, & Recreation program receiving a grant of over$240,000 from the Association of Washington Cities. There being no further business to come before the Jr. City Council, the meeting adjourned at 7:48 p.m. APPROVED this 21 day of April 2022.
