HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-06-2022 Minutes City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Tuesday, October 6, 2022 Meeting Minutes Present: Arts Commission: John Harris, Ana Kear, Eydie Leighty, Tori Olsen, Dinah Rau, Kent Sprague, Kenneth Greg Watson Excused: Kristine De Leon, Tammy Dwight, Trisenda Mayfield, Chris Olds Unexcused: Ann Marie Natali Staff: Mary Ellen Bowers, Arts Assistant; Allison Hyde, Arts Coordinator; Julie Krueger, Arts & Events Manager Guests: Jens Malone, City of Auburn Arts Intern I. Call to Order a. Call to Order – Chair Leighty called the meeting to order at 4:31PM. b. Public comment – Chair Leighty asked if there were any comments from the public. There were no public comments. c. Approval of Arts Commission minutes – Chair Leighty briefly welcomed Commissioners to the meeting and asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the August 2, 2022, Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Sprague moved that the minutes be accepted as written. Commissioner Harris seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. d. Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde introduced a guest, Jens Malone who will be working with Hyde as an Arts Intern. II. 2023 Gallery and Art on Main Applications a. 2023 Gallery Exhibition Recommendations - Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the 2023 recommendations for gallery exhibitions. 57 applications were received. Hyde thanked the jurors who participated in selecting the artists who will be invited to exhibit their artwork in two City Galleries. Hyde notified commissioners that the city will host art exhibitions in the Cheryl Sallee Gallery and the Auburn Community & Events Center in 2023. In anticipation of the added work being done to create a third gallery in the new Arts & Culture Center, the City Hall Gallery will be transitioned to a space to showcase prints of Auburn’s outstanding public art pieces. Hyde presented a slideshow of the recommendations for exhibitions in the two City galleries including 5 alternate artists to be invited in the event of cancellations. b. 2023 Art on Main Gallery Exhibition Recommendations - Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the Art on Main application recommendations for 2023. Hyde explained the jury process and thanked the jurors who participated in selecting the artists who will be invited to install their artwork in the Art on Main window front gallery. There were 31 applicants for 4 exhibit opportunities. The Commission reviewed a slideshow of the 4 top rated applicants who will be invited to create artwork for the space, as well as the top 2 alternates. c. A motion was made by Commissioner Watson to approve the recommended slate or artists and alternates for the Gallery program and the Art on Main program. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Rau. Chair Leighty called the vote and the motion passed unanimously. III. Updates and News a. Arts & Events Manager Julie Krueger updated commissioners on progress at the Arts & Culture Center. Repairs to the roof are nearly complete, and the iconic steel and glass cupola on top of the building has been repaired and repainted. A light was installed and tested. Commissioners can see a picture of the cupola on the Arts & Culture Center page of the City’s website. b. Krueger noted that due to slight delays, the anticipated opening of the top floor of the Art & Culture Center will take place in the first quarter of 2023. c. Arts Coordinator Hyde updated commissioners on the final exhibition of the Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence, Amanda Triplett. The exhibition took place at the farm during the popular Hops ‘n’ Crops festival. d. Hyde shared information about the 2023 Artist in Residence program application and reminded jurors that applications close on October 6, 2022. e. Hyde updated the commission regarding the 2022-23 Downtown Sculpture Gallery. 11 new sculptures have been installed. A brochure is in final steps before publication and the website has been updated with images, artist names and locations of the sculptures. Commissioners were invited to visit the Downtown Sculpture Gallery page on the city website to cast their votes for the People’s Choice Award. IV. Adjourn Arts Commission - There being no further business, Commissioner Sprague moved to adjourn the meeting, Commissioner Harris seconded the motion. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 5:05 PM.
