Minutes of the Auburn Airport Advisory Committee
May 19, 2009

First order of business was to approve the minutes of the last meeting. Motion
was made, seconded and unanimously passed that the minutes of April 21, 2009
are approved at this time.
Mr. Peloza introduced himself and stated he supports the airport 100%. Mr.
Kopp mentioned it was nice to have the City support the airport and general
aviation.
Old Business
Taxiway Construction 2007/2008 Update - Constructions is to begin June1,
2009. A pre-construction meeting with ICON and Reid Middleton is set for May
27tn regarding the staging and phasing work. Total time for this project is
scheduled for 80 working days. The project is set for finro phases to save work
days. No dates for runway closure or displace thresholds is set at this time.
Updates will be posted on the airport's web site as they become available.
Weekly Monday meetings will be conducted at Northwest Aviation College to
plan out the next finro weeks... Letters have been sent to all airplane and
helicopter operators of the construction advising pilots to be aware of their
prop/rotor wash and their liability for damage or injury from the prop/rotor wash..
Mike Kopp suggested that high traffic days be avoided for runway closure. Mr.
Garcia mentioned that Thursdays seems to be the day with least traffic,
according to fuel sales.
Storm Water Update -The source of water in the southwest ditch is still unclear.
Mr. Garcia said AMG will get white paper together concerning the storm water to
the City. He also stated that Armstrong Construction has covered area with
gravel/asphalt possibly causing water sheeting in to the south drainage ditch.
Perhaps a cascading type dam could slow the water flow to the street and
causing water to backup north/south and east/west.
Hangar Rows 2-8 Condition Survey -Shelley Coleman requested areas on
Hangar rows 5& 6 be tested so we can get a complete scope of work that needs
to be done. Mike Shipman said Waters and Woods took off plywood on those
rows yesterday and they may have been placed to protect beams from catching
water. Once the details come in from the airport will need to get together with
Steve Burke and put out bid to get the work done.
Posting Contact Information for Hangars (owners/renters) - Jamelle Garcia
presented the emergency contact information display to be installed just inside
the main gate.
Annual Review of Airport Rules and Regulation- Mark
Babcock, Mike Kopp, Mike Shipman and Jamelle Garcia have reviewed half of
the Rules and Regs. A copy of the document with word tracking changes will be
presented to the City and Steve Gross for review
NW Skyraiders- A proposal has been submitted by the NW Skyraiders to use
the south ramp for line controlled aircraft. Mr. Ferguson has a copy of insurance
and could send club's policy if requested. These flights are not radio controlled,
but tethered flights with cables attached to the aircraft. Fueling procedures are in
place and flight time is 7-8 minutes. Mike Kopp asked about refueling and if fire
extinguishing capabilities are in place. Mr. Ferguson replied that with the
methanol based fuel fires are rare, the aircraft have a D cell to light the glo plug,
but an extinguisher could be stationed in the pit area. Mr. Kopp also inquired
about having a supervisor present and Mr. Ferguson said that is not a problem
since he attends all events.
They are flexible with their dates since the season is mid April to September.
The aircraft need 160 ft. diameter to fly and max line length is 70 ft. on the
airplane. Two circles would work at the south end, but the north end would be
too tight leaving no allotment for buffer. Mike Shipman asked how long sessions
last. Peter said half day, usually ending before 2 p.m. because of wind. A
motion made to recommend to the City to approve a preliminary Fun Fly event
was seconded and unanimously approved.
Swap meet- Nothing scheduled at this time due to construction project. Possible
change the date to August.
Helicopter Noise- Ongoing problem exists with noise from helicopters in SE of
the Auburn airport. Mr. Garcia has sent Flying friendly; a helicopter document
which has noise abatement emphasis. Helicopters are in compliance with FAA
regulation and the FAA will not do anything unless a regulation is broken.
New Business: Shelley Coleman asked for hangar row headers to be replaced
ASAP since there are adequate airport funds. Tom Matson asked if the airport
has a maintenance budget. Header beams should be stained or sanded and
paint every 5 years.
Mike Kopp asked about an AWOS (Automated Weather Observation System)
update. Mike Shipman replied the normal way to get AWOS is to go through a
private company. There is one in California and one on the East coast. Pierce
Co. airport bought one from a California company. Bruce Thun at Pierce Co.
Airport said the system costs about $60,000. Mike Shipman said he would like to
get Federal or State grant to purchase this system.
