Meeting Minutes
Commissioners Present: Linda Elliott, Laurel Siegmund, Donna Smart, Pat Judd, Tanya
Rottle, Debby Deal, Cary Davidson, Nancy Colson,. Amanda Flanery, Councilman Rich Wagner
Commissioners Excused: Pat Gallagher, Leslie Moore, Youth Council Liaison Erika Shepherd
Staff Present: Laurie Rose, Maija McKnight
I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions: Chair Nancy Colson called the
meeting to order at 4:32 pm
II. Approval of Minutes: Ms. Colson called for approval of the December minutes.
Commissioner Linda Elliott moved the minutes be approved as submitted.
Commissioner Tanya Rottle seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Opening Remarks: Ms. Colson noted that the viewing of the 25th Anniversary Video
would be moved to the end of the agenda.
III. ACTION ITEM: Acceptance of "Veteran's Day" arfinrork by Greg Boudreau: The
artwork was created as part of an exhibit coordinated by the Cultural Arts Staff that
was on display as part of `The People and Places of Auburn' exhibit at the Golf
Course Clubhouse in August 2008. Commissioner Linda Elliott moved to purchase
the artwork "Veteran's Day" by Greg Boudreau to be permanently located at the
Veteran's Memorial Building. Commissioner Cary Davidson seconded.
Discussion followed regarding appropriate lighting of the artwork and the reflective
glare off the piece from the fluorescent fixtures in the building. Staff will look into
solutions to reduce the reflective glare. Motion approved.
IV. Committee Reports
Public Art Committee: Senior Planner Elizabeth Chamberlain has been scheduled
for February meeting to present information about Downtown Committee plans and
to discuss temporary public art exhibits as well as permanently sited works as well.
Out of this and subsequent meetings will be developed a Public Art Downtown
Master Plan. Staff has already met with this committee in regards to City Hall Plaza
design.
Visual/Public Art Coordinator Maija McKnight reported that the date for the 25th
Anniversary Public Art Reception will be Thursday, September 24th in the evening at
the Truitt Building Rainer Room. A letter of invitation and request for participation
was sent to those artists whose works are featured in the City's public art collection.
Responses from the artists, both for attendance and participation, will help dictate
the program for the evening and level of artist involvement. Committee next steps
include program planning and invitation/mailing list creation.

Ms. McKnight reported that the Golf Course Public Artwork by Susan Zoccola has
encountered a delay in completion. Ms. Zoccola continues to stay in contact with City
staff regarding her progress and is actively interviewing to hire a new fabricator to
see through the completion of the installation. Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose
mentioned that oftentimes in the development of public artworks there are
unforeseen circumstances, like other capital projects, that create delays through no
fault of the artist.
Ms. Rose reported on the Community Center Public Artwork and thanked the Arts
Commission for their feedback on the presentation by Virginia Paquette at the
January Commission meeting. Ms. Paquette also presented her model to the
Community Center Committee on January 27th and has been making progress to
determine the details, budget and engineering requirements alongside architecture
firm.
Councilman Rich Wagner reported the he Ms. Paquette visited Denny Swanson as a
resource to mill and dry the wood that will be used as part of the fireplace mantel
artwork. Ms. Paquette intends to use the cherry trees from the site in which the
community center will be built.
Visual Art Committee: Commissioner Laurel Siegmund reported that the Visual Arts
Committee is planning for its 25th Anniversary event to take place on Saturday, July
25th, 2009 at Les Gove Park. Event planning including call to artists, types of booths
desired, and event logistics are the action items for upcoming committee meetings.
Ms. Rose noted that Special Events Coordinator Kristy Pachciarz attended the last
committee meeting in order advice best practices and give input on many logistical
items. Ms. McKnight noted that the Parks, Arts and Recreation Marketing Staff
suggested the name of the event be changed from "Art-Tagious" to "ArtRagious" and
that this could be further discussed at an upcoming committee meeting.
Commissioner Tanya Rottle noted that when selecting artists to be involved it may
be important to maintain a distinction between crafty and fine art and that this can be
difficult to determine if artists don't represent themselves accurately.
Performing Art Committee: Ms. Rose noted that the Performing Art Committee has
several interested individuals who have set their first meeting for the end of the
month. The agenda will be a loose format to brainstorm and talk about potential
goals for this committee.
Arts Education Committee: Commissioner ponna Smart reported that the first
meeting of this newly formed committee discussed developing a full roster of a
variety of fine art education classes through the Parks, Arts and Recreation
programs, participating in Arts Education Week in May, and coordinating a Student
Art Show to be displayed at Auburn Avenue Theater in Nov-Dec 2009. Ms. Smart
noted that the committee is additional members and hope to start to address the lack
of arts in the schools and what the commission can do to support arts education in K-
12. Ms. Smart would also like to explore a partnership with Green River CC
Foundation's "Art Docent" school residency program.
Ms. McKnight reported that a Beginning Stenciling class, May 7- May 28, Th 3-
4:30p taught by artist Chris Sharp has been scheduled and that work is being done
to schedule additional art classes for the Fall recreation guide.

V. ACTION ITEM 25th Anniversary: Emeritus Membership: Ms. Colson reviewed a
meeting with Commissioner Leslie Moore and Ms. Rose regarding Emeritus
Memberships. As a"kick-off° event to commemorate the 25'h Anniversary, the Mayor
and City Council will declare during regular March 2"d Council Meeting recognition of
the commission's 25th Anniversary and induct founding members as Emeritus.
Commissioner Laurel Siegmund moved that founding commissioners Herman
Ansingh, Barbara Sharrard, and posthumously, Gertrude Sprenger be inducted as
Emeritus Members. Linda Elliott seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Prior to the Council Meeting on March 2"d, an informal reception will be held in the
lobby at City Hall to meet and greet current and former Arts Commissioners, as well
as take in the new exhibit scheduled for installation that same day. Staff will send out
invitations.
Ms. Elliott noted that there are many others integral to the Art Commission and that
special recognition should occur throughout the year where appropriate.
VI. Staff Report
Ms. Rose reported that 4-Culture annual came through at last year's level. Ms. Rose
reminded the commission that some of the funds will be used to support all the
events planned for the 25th Anniversary.
Ms. Rose distributed the Auburn Parks, Arts and Recreation "Year in Review" and
encouraged commissioners to read the document to give a broad sense of the many
impactful and important projects that the Park, Arts and Recreation manage. The

Ms. Rose reported that the Arts Commission participation at the recent Uniquely
Auburn event was well received. A Public Art Matching Game created by Ms.
McKnight was an effective tool to interact with attendees and share information about
the Public Art Program. The 25t" Anniversary DVD ran during "pre-show" in the
theater. Approximately 300-400 people attend this event.
Ms. Smart reported on behalf of Staff on Arts Day participation in Olympia earlier that
day. She and Ms. Rose attended the lobby day and were able to have group
meetings with representatives from District 31 and 47. Ms. Smart provided a brief
overview of the salient issues and points that were discussed with the legislators
regarding funding and continuing support for the arts.
VII. 25th Anniversary DVD: Ms. Rose introduced the video and noted that shorter
versions will be created for use in the community. Copies could be made available
and encouraged the commissioners to think of it as a tool to promote and educate
about the role of the commission. The DVD in the original form is approximately 25
minutes in length and will be screened in full on the Auburn Government Channel 21.
Commissioner Cary Davidson commented, following the viewing, regarding access
to the arts in Auburn's schools. His experience as an educator that local High
Schools in the area actually have relatively good arts programs and that the real
vacuum was in the elementary and middle-schools.
